Do I have to spend many dollars to buy expensive designer sunglasses or I can get same effect from cheap one?

shotaflex asked:

Do I have to spend many dollars to buy expensive designer sunglasses to get good UV protection, and not to harm eyes or I can get same effect from cheap ones? From outer look, cheap sunglasses, which are sold in every regular store, are the same as expensive designer sunglasses.

I think they are the same. I think with designer sunglasses you’re just paying for the label, but I could be way off.

with ‘designer’ sunglasses, you are paying for a designer name, not the product itself

kewlsurf is not way off….I read or seen on tv a test of different sunglasses…..uv protection is about the same no matter what the price….clarity is better on more expensive sunglasses though

While ti is true that a lot of the time you are just paying for the name you are also paying for quality. While most cheap sunglasses offer almost teh same or the same protection as designer ones, they often do not last long. I use to go through about 6 pairs in one summer. That is about 40.00. Then about 8 years ago, i bought a pair of Ray-Bans for 80.00 and have had them ever since. So it depends on you. You can also go to a eye place and have inexpensive, but nice ones made for you, they are usually around 30-40.

The cheap ones break a lot quicker and the sides get looser much quicker. Try a place like Marshall’s or TJ MAXX, they have brand names like Hilfiger and Polo for much less than Macy’s and the quality is good.

Buy the best you can afford. Your vision is worth the investment.

You can get 100% UV protection with inexpensive sunglasses but, as you pointed out they only look like the expensive ones on the outside. It’s not just the designer label that affects the cost. Besides the quality of the frame (connection points, quality of hinges, how they fit) you should be more concerned about the quality of the lenses. In the cheap knock-offs the lenses can contain bubbles and scratches that may make your eyes work harder. You should always buy lenses that prevent glare and squinting.

I’ve gone through my share of inexpensive sunglasses like most people here and will still use them in a pinch (when I forget my better ones at home…I always keep an emergency pair in the glove compartment of my vehicle, either for myself or my passenger).

Once upon a time when I had more money I paid around $130 for a pair of Smith sunglasses. They have a great replacement warranty and superior optical lens quality like many of the other expensive brands. After breaking them once and then having the second pair stolen I decided I needed to find a less expensive option. I went to Academy (store that specializes in sporting goods) and looked at all the options and settled for a pair of Magellan sunglasses that looked the same as the ones I had lost. The Magellan glasses are as well made as the most expensive brands and the lenses are a good quality polarized variety (prevents glare and squinting and especially helpful when driving). The best thing is that they cost less than half the price of the ones I lost, and…I’ve never lost or broken them no matter how abusive I am to them. My husband prefers Ray-Bans so we got a pair for him as well for under $70. For the price of one pair of Smith sunglasses I bought two pairs of quality sunglasses.

There is a lot of good information from the link below. Due to copyright laws I can’t post the information here but it is good information for people to know, if they want to protect their eyes when choosing sunglasses.

my personal experience….
I went to macys and got a pair of fossil glasses…. they had little beads and pearls on the front and sides, really nice. $40. I lost them. I went to tx max, found them in pink (ew) for almost $10, the hinges were loose and some jewels were missing…. Mine never came off…. my real ones were solid and perfect, these cheap ones were…. CHEAP.
